ĊAQLAQ Campaign
During this scholastic year, at Mellieha primary school we are focusing on the importance of living a healthy life. Students at Maria Regina College Mellieħa Primary are made aware of the importance of physical activity and of eating a well-balanced diet. Students are involved in many sport activities and we also decided to take part in a new Health Awareness Campaign entitled “CAQLAQ!” This campaign is being sponsored by the Fundacion MAPFRE. Middlesea Insurance, which forms part of the MAPFRE Group, was entrusted with coordinating the “CAQLAQ” campaign with the help of animation group Generation Green.
This campaign aims to introduce primary school students to the fundamentals of living a healthy lifestyle namely good nutrition and physical activity. On Friday, 29 November 2013, First Lady Mrs Margaret Abela and Middlesea Insurance President and CEO Mr Alfredo Munoz visited our school during a workshop organised for Year 2 and Year 3 pupils.
In his address, Mr Munoz stated that health is often referred to as the most valuable thing one can have. Unfortunately, however, it is often neglected and this leads to a number of health problems.
The aim of this campaign is to highlight the importance of having a healthy lifestyle by following a balanced diet and doing physical activity by making children aware of the risks of not taking care of their body. Year 3 Merilli presented the Caqlaq song to the audience together with Chef Smoothie.
Year 5 students also sang the song 'Nikbru b'Sahhitna', written and composed by the Music teacher Mr Victor Cutajar. The song talks about the importance of eating a balanced diet and the importance of doing physical activity.
The program was conducted through a series of fun, comical and interactive workshops held in the school hall. During the workshops, Chef Smoothie explained the healthy food pyramid in simple terms which can be understood by children, encouraging them to eat more fruits and vegetables. The energetic and cheerful chef prepared healthy smoothies to be given to all the children. Fitboy, another joyful character, demonstrate to children how they too can become as fit and healthy as him by exercising. He also performs the song “I need vitamins”. The children joined in.
As part of the campaign books were distributed to students so as to reinforce the message.
This was another event which our students really enjoyed.
